Market of choice?
A new poll suggests people in highland parks are looking for the best place to get a horse or dog.
It was released by the Horse Industry Association (HAI) yesterday and it shows the market is dominated by horse and dog owners looking for a home.
The poll of 1,000 people by online pollster Ipsos MORI found a majority (56 per cent) were looking to buy their horse or pet from a licensed farm or breeder.
This included 62 per cent who were considering a horse/dog breeder who was based in Perth, the state’s largest city, while 41 per cent were considering an accredited breeder in Perth.
HAI’s poll also showed a third of people surveyed (34 per cent), who owned horses or dogs, said they were looking for someone to buy them from.
The survey also found that 51 per cent of those surveyed were looking at a horse groomer or pet groomer who had the ability to care for the animal.
The study also found 69 per cent would like to buy or rent a horse to do a pet sitter for a person or family.HAI president Steve Smith said people in Perth were looking out for their own best interests and it was encouraging that the market was competitive.
“The industry is working to make sure there is an efficient market for our horses and dogs,” Mr Smith said.
“I think that will make the market more efficient for everyone.”
Horses and dogs are among the most popular pets in our community.
“It is great to see the industry working to support their growth, which is why we are continuing to support the Horse Welfare Association (HWA) in their fight for better animal welfare.”
This market is in high demand and we are committed to supporting the industry to provide the best care and services to our horses.
“The survey, conducted online from May 26 to June 4, was weighted towards households in WA.
The data was weighted for age, gender and income level.
The results were published in a special issue of the WA Gazette, on Tuesday.
