Walmart announced on October 11, 2017 that it would close its Mexican markets and Stock markets in Houston.
The company stated that it was closing the markets due to rising costs in the US.
The decision to close the Mexican markets comes as Walmart has faced criticism in recent weeks over the company’s business practices in Mexico, especially its lack of transparency regarding workers’ rights.
In September, Walmart announced it would shutter its Mexican market and Stock market, which had operated since 2006.
The Mexican markets are the largest in the country and were a hub for Mexican workers to earn wages, as well as a major source of income for the families of Mexican immigrants living in the United States.
They are also a vital part of Walmart’s business, as they were Walmart’s largest business in the Mexican market in 2018, according to an analysis by the US Chamber of Commerce.
