Japan’s Nikkei 225 stock index surged to a six-week high Wednesday, and has now gained more than 10% since the beginning of the year, the highest gain since mid-2015.
It was the strongest gain in more than four years.
The Nikkeis rise and fall over the past year have been marked by an influx of foreigners to Japan, and a rise in the number of people buying and selling stocks.
The Nikkeits gains and falls have largely mirrored each other, but this time, the gains and drops have come from the stock market’s own trading algorithms.
